Saint Alphonsus Church Stained Glass Windows RestorationX
Designed by Robert Cary Long in 1845, this Gothic Revival landmark in downtown Baltimore listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was once the heart of Baltimore's German Catholic population. The windows are early examples of hand-painted American stained glass. Decades of pollution, building settlement and exposure to the elements took a toll on the 164-year-old stained glass windows. About 20 percent of the 1,200 individual glass pieces in each window were broken. The multi year phased restoration included replacing missing sections of windows and the removal and replacement of mismatched repairs. Each window was carefully removed, disassembled, cleaned, repaired, releaded and reinstalled in completely restored cast iron window frames.
